I’m going to tell you right now, this Gallant book review is not going to do Victoria’s prose justice. The way she describes colors and smells and tastes and feelings had me stepping into Olivia’s shoes as though they were made for my feet. Each and every sentence was carefully crafted by an artist’s hand. And chances are, I’m also gonna love it.Īnd that’s exactly what happened here, though I was less prepared for how stunningly beautiful V.E. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you describe a book as Gothic in any way, shape, or form, I’m gonna pick it up. But I’m a little mad they didn’t tell me she was this good.įortunately, Gallant was the perfect book for me to start with. I knew there was a reason why she was popular, why some people-whose book opinions I trust above most others-count her as one of their favorite authors. Now, I’m kicking myself that “some day” wasn’t years ago. And it’s not because I didn’t want to! Some of my friends are massive fans, and I even have a few of her books lining my shelves that I promised I’d get to some day. Schwab/Victoria Schwab prior to picking up Gallant. This Gallant book review is a spoiler-free look at the way the shadows move across V.E.

As with his other book series, the Nancy Drew series was penned by a collection of ghostwriters under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. Publisher Edward Stratemeyer conceived of the Nancy Drew character to add to his already-lucrative young-adult book empire that included “The Hardy Boys.” In fact, Stratemeyer was a firm believer in traditional roles for women. Nancy Drew was not originally supposed to be the fierce, fearless and feminist heroine that she became. The fictional teenage sleuth has been cited by luminaries from Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush to Sonia Sotomayor as an important influence during their formative years. To date, more than 70 million copies of the Nancy Drew books have been sold. Written under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene, readers met the plucky young heroine Nancy Drew for the first time. The greed motif was apparent throughout the book, in stark contrast to the theme of The Street Lawyer. In The Partner, his last novel, the main character was motivated primarily by money as he put his former law partners through the ringer by making off with funds intended for them and a client. The answer depends on whether you are socially or economically oriented. Depending on your value system, Grisham deals with either the lower end of the legal ladder or the higher end.
